There are three of us in our little family. Four with the dog. We’re building a house in Spokane, Washington and wanted a place to share a few stories with friends, family, and likely a few others.
Matt Melcher from iDR Studios has designed the house. Although he doesn’t have a web site if you’d like to reach him feel free to drop us a note.
Congratulations on the ground breaking! Big stuff.
enjoy your site look forward to following your progress.
we have a similar project that is the subject of a documentary over at
http://www.maxonhouse.com
sharing the good/bad/ugly for the entire process of building a modern
house for a real live family with kids…..
congrats on your new housE!
Great site, Lou. And I’m envious. You have sponsors! Nicely done. Kidding of course–I get that you’re making a documentary of your project. Still…sponsors…
Glad you could connect with us. I’ll look forward to tracking your project. Our architect, Matt Melcher, worked for Tom Kundig for about five years (I think) before coming back to Spokane to teach in the Master’s program at Washington State University. So that’s a fun connection too.

thanks for the note. i’m not doing the documentary though, a filmmaker and producer is (they have sponsors not us!). i am, however, blogging about the experience for dwell magazine (http://www.dwell.com/people/lou-maxon.html
Well, you certainly have an interesting project and great story to tell. Very cool about Dwell, too. Our architect has talked about his interest in getting our project published. Any suggestions of anyone we should talk with at Dwell? While I run a PR firm, pitching home/shelter magazines is a bit out of the ordinary for me and I don’t have relationships there. Would love your thoughts!
It’s looking great even at this beginning stage. Be of stout heart and good cheer. This called living the dream. Mom
Great advice, as usual. Thanks!
Awesome! Looking forward to seeing it this summer.
Thanks Wendy! We’re excited to have you over, too. It’s a good goal–complete house before Wendy comes out for the summer! Check.
Wow! What a great project. I have to admit, I am VERY jealous of your soon to be home. I am a student of Mat’s and have had the pleasure to tour some of his previous work and he creates truly amazing things. I am excited to hear about your project’s details, and agree, that even the small things matter. As Eames once said “The details are not the details, they make the design.” I am looking forward to joining you in your journey and see your amazing home come to fruition.
Cassidy:
Thanks for the comment and the kudos. We’re having a great time. Cool that you know Matt, too. If you’d be interested in visiting the site let me know. We’d be happy to have you out sometime.
Great quote from the Eames(es?) too. Hadn’t heard that one in a while, but very true!
Nice project! I bet it’s going to be gorgeous when it’s finished.

Thanks, Eric. Should be fun to watch come together and make happen. Plus, when we’re done I’ll get strong like a bull on the bike. Greenwood isn’t a joke to ride up every day!
I’m really enjoying your home building blog.
We will be breaking ground Spring ’12 in the Methow Valley, and it’s fun to read others house building experiences and see the progress in your photos.
Great house!
Chris
Glad you like the blog, Christopher. Hope you enjoy your adventure. And the Methow Valley…awesome stuff! Such a beautiful area. What style of house are you designing?
Sorry for the late reply – couldn’t remember what page I posted on ; )
Well… I had designed a beautiful contemporary mountain home, but as of late, with the uncertainty of the economy, we are leaning towards a possible expansion and remodel of the existing cabin.
We cannot wait to get back to the Methow.
Here’s the original design…
We lived on South Hill in Spokane a couple years back – rehabbed a neglected old dairy house built in 1887…
This is a perfect Spokane Vortex moment. We’ve actually met before, Christopher. I used to live around the corner from your old (and awesome) house on the South Hill. We lived on the corner of 16th and Adams. ( http://1527house.wordpress.com ) Anyway, you gave me a tour when you were selling, and we talked a number of times about linking up for a bike ride, but it never worked out. Glad you’re on the way back to Washington. Great stuff!
Wow…
Small world.
I guess we’ll have to hook up for a ride in the Methow ; )
Our renter just gave notice as he has bought a house, and so I will be making an unexpected trip to the Methow to shut the cabin down for the Winter – and prep for groundbreaking in the Spring. We have decided to renovate the cabin and add a second floor.
Not quite as exciting, but it will give us a little more cash, and me, more time to ride ; )
And again, great house! Congratulations on such a beautiful house and massive accomplishment.
Chris
So, so….lovely. We’re a local family with interest in building. Just exploring at this point. Have special considerations, namely many children, to consider. Fun to happen upon your blog. Would love to come check it out and get some ideas about where to start and what we’re looking at as far as actual cost to build etc…. Might contact Matt, if that would be okay.
Hi Kelly.
Drop me a line at amylroie @ gmail.com and we can connect. Happy to connect you with Matt, who I’m sure would love to hear from you too, or answer other questions about the house. Talk to you soon. -Andrei
I have spent several days pouring over the blog. . . the house, the process, and the story are enthralling. I also am in Spokane and have hopefully a 5 year plan to build something similar and would love to connect and hear more about the process you went through, the team you gathered, and how you made your dream a reality!
Cheers!
Brad
Brad, happy to do it! My email is amylroie @ gmail.com. Drop me a line anytime. Happy to share our experiences in a bit more detail. And glad someone is still looking at this blog. I haven’t looked at it in ages!
Cheers,
Andrei
Wonderful! I sent an email a few days ago, looking forward to touching base.
Cheers,
Brad
